Mohel Maurits (Mozes) Winkel
Maurits (Mozes) Winkel
was born in The Hague on August 27, 1849. Except
for being a manufacturer in the business of his
father Salomon, Maurits (who
called himself Mozes)
became later a merchant in haberdashery.
Maurits has played an
important role in the Jewish religious and social
life in The Hague. Of years he was a member of the
council of the Second Synagogue situated in the
Wagenstraat. His great notoriety as mohel was well
known and the circumcision register is evidence of
his activity as mohel.
This register of 301
circumcisions which decribes the period of 15 July
1877 till 10 May 1896 is only a fraction of the
total amount of circumcisions performed by him
(according to the WINKEL genealogy about 1800).
His functions as a
member of the board in many charity associations
testify to his social quality. On 9 December 1884
Maurits Winkel marries Esther Content in
Amsterdam, she is the daughter of Jacob Moses, the
well-known Amsterdam Rabbi "Jokef" Content and
Gelle Weinthal.

dies in The Hague on 22 May, 1932.
In 1860 Rabbi Zwi
Benjamin Auerbach wrote an introduction in German
for the circumcision register, in which he
describes the prayers and rites for a Berith. This
booklet, "Berith Abraham," written in German and
published in Frankfurt can be found in the library
of the Berlin Museum.

Maurits
(Mozes) Winkel
werd op 27 Augustus 1849 in 's Gravenhage
geboren. Behalve manufacturier in de zaak van zijn
vader Salomon is Maurits, (die zich Mozes noemde)
later ook koopman-grossier in garen en band
geworden.
Mozes heeft een belangrijke rol
gespeeld in het Joods godsdienstig en
maatschappelijk leven van 's Gravenhage. Jarenlang
is hij lid van de Kerkekraad van de Tweede
Synagoge in de Wagenstraat geweest. Grote
bekendheid heeft hij ook genoten als mohel,
waarvan het besnijdenisregister een getuige is.
Dit register bevattend 301
besnijdenissen in de periode 15 juli 1877 tot 10
mei 1896 beslaat slechts een
gedeelte van de in totaal door
hem verrichtte besnijdenissen ( volgens de
genealogie van WINKEL
ong. 1800).
Zijn bestuursfuncties van vele
charitatieve verenigingen getuigen van zijn
sociale bewogenheid.
Maurits
Winkel trouwt op 9 December 1884 in Amsterdam met
Esther Content, dochter van Jacob Moses, de
bekende Amsterdamse rabbijn "Jokef" Content en
Gelle Weinthal.
Maurits Mozes Winkel is op 22 Mei 1932 in 's
Gravenhage overleden.
Rabbijn Zwi Benjamin Auerbach heeft
in 1860 een introductie in het duits bij het
besnijdenisregister van
mohel Maurits Winkel geschreven, waarin hij
de gebeden en riten behorend bij een Berit nader
beschrijft. Dit boekje,
"Berith
Abraham," uitgegeven in Franfurt am Main,
verscheen in het Duits en is o.a. in de
bibliotheek van het Berlin Museum.
