Gorissen, Lambertus
Before the war, Lambertus Gorissen and Raphael (Raf) Silberberg were both scouts in Arnhem, Gelderland, and became good friends. In 1942, Raf got married and moved to Amsterdam. When it became clear that the Jews of Amsterdam would have to go int o hiding, Raf&Aelig;s father asked Lambertus if he would shelter Raf and his wife, Jette Rachel Silberberg-Hoogstraal. Lambertus agreed and went personally to Amsterdam to pick them up. Lambertus returned with them to Arnhem by train though it was forbi dden for Jews to use public transportation. On their arrival in Arnhem, Lambertus escorted each refugee to a different address. Raf was soon betrayed, discovered, and deported. Jette was taken to Bep and Gerrit van der Burg*, with whom she remaine d until the end of the war. While Jette was in hiding, Lambertus stayed in touch with her. He regularly delivered food coupons to the van der Burgs, and gave Jette moral support. At the end of 1944, when Jette was forced to leave her hideout, Lamb ertus transferred her to his parents&Aelig; home, in a different part of Arnhem. The journey was fraught with danger. Soon after the birth of their child, Bep and Gerrit invited Jette back to their home. Again, Lambertus escorted Jette on the treacherou s journey. During the war, Lambertus also worked as a courier between the Utrecht and Arnhem sections of the UKC* for six weeks. His task was to accompany children to their hiding places. In addition to this, Lambertus would regularly deliver th e food coupons he had obtained from Paul Terwindt* to between six and eight addresses where children were in hiding. Lambertus believed it was a natural instinct to help people in need. After the war, Jette Silberberg (later Yael Lanir) move d to Israel. She remained in contact with Lambertus.
On February 6, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Lambertus Gorissen as Righteous Among the Nations.
