(this story by: KO(?))Mid last century, Nathan Judels was the foremost comic in the country. As from 1861 he managed, together with Pierre Boas, a theatre company that played in the Salon des Varietes in the Amstelstraat - then in the heart of on e of the main entertainment areas.
The repertoire of this company, which consisted of popular drama and comedies - so called "Vaudevilles" -, large theatres would never have dared to perform.
Theather experts did not wish to get involved with it, with the exception when Judels himself acted in it.
"Judels knows the folks soal. He used all nuances of humor, crazied, fooled, was sometimes 'boertig' (farmerish) and made a fool of many things in a brilliant way. He wasvery adrem and fast and did not neglect the touching sentiments, as being th e always melancholic Jew. Heperformed sometimes the weak, uninspiring comedies, without any hesitance, veryserious and this was then enough harvest even more success than before."
The company Boas & Judels travelled all over the country and was known at any carnival. Some great actors, such as Louis Bouwmeester (Ko : the great Shakespeare performer of his time, not only in Holland) and Suze Sablairolles, started their carri ers with them.
One of Judels' most known acts is the title personality of the 'School teacher'. Sometimes he also played tragedy, however, the audience regarded him only as a comic.
Thus, tentative sincerely dramatic scenes became subject of roaring laughter successes. Though, he also knew how to touch his audience heavely with his soft singing voice. With that, he acted in operettes, especially those of Offenbach, a hyp e in those times. In 1878, Judels retired from the theatre. At the age of 88 he passed away, caused by pneumonia, after he had fallen into the Amstel river ( the main river of Amsterdam)
