25 Nov 1754 - Jacob Jonas, jewish businessman in Leeuwarden, authorizes Hendrik Jongma in Harlingen, to accept in his name shiploads of businessware and to pay for them.
These goods were sent from Harlingen to Konigsberg.

After experiencing financial difficulties:
19 Aug 1755 - Ralph Shatterley, businessman in Henley, England, has detained a great amount of houseware and jewelry, packed in crates and en route on the nightboat from Leeuwarden to Harlingen. They should however, allegedly, belong to Levi Heima ns, businessman in Leeuwarden.
It concerns the 'geabandonneerde Boedel van Jacob Jonas cum uxore van hier Extra Provintiam vertrocken' [the estate left behind by Jacob Jonas, who by plight[?] left from here to outside the province].
Jacob Jonas seems to have gone broke. As late as 1738 he and his brother Israel Jonas were guarantees at time of the bankruptcy (amount of more than fl. 100.000,-) of their father Jonas Josephs in Amsterdam.
The value of the shipment is taxated at about fl. 1350,-.
In the city archive of Leeuwarden the documents concerning the bankruptcy of Jacob Jonas are kept in the Sententie- & Hypotheekbooks. There exists a debt of 19.900 caroliguilders for delivered
hemp & woodwares to Paulson & Meiers in Company in Konigsberg , East Prussia.
In an act d.d. 3 Oct 1755 Jacob's spouse Sara Waagh declares, that she wishes, as well as her husband, to waive her ownership and to abandon her share of the goods, enabling the election of a curator by her debitors.
(G.A.L. Inventarisatieboeken 1755, pp' 176-182v)
The goods, detained by Shatterley, are on 16 Sep 1755 still to be found at the townhouse. At that date Jacob Jonas' nephew, Adam Joseph Levie adresses the Frisian Court [Hof van Friesland].
He contends to have financial demands on his uncle for the amount of 3985 caroliguilders, which he previously had supplied him with in order to aid him is his business. He further urges to sell the goods detained, because part of the goods is liab le to be spoiled. Furthermore he expresses distrust in mr. Shatterley's right to detain the said goods.
